Eftersom diagnostiken fortlöpande utvecklas är det angeläget att SVA alltid kontaktas för att få aktuell information om provtagning och undersökningsmaterial.
Diagnos sker genom antikroppstest (komplementbindning, hemagglutination-inhibitionstest) på blod från hästar i febrilt stadium, men även på blod från hästar i konvalescensstadiet. Diagnos ställs även genom histopatologi på hjärnvävnad (framförallt cerebrala cortex) och inre organ, samt immunohistokemi på vävnadsmaterial. Virusisolering kan göras från blod eller hjärna.
