Hos nyfödda grisar kan mortaliteten närma sig 100 %, då dessa i hög grad drabbas av CNS-symtom efter en kort inledande period av hög feber och nedsatt allmäntillstånd. CNS-symtomen kan yttra sig som muskeldarrningar, ataxi, epilepsiliknande konvulsioner, cirkelgång som snabbt leder till koma och död.
